High potential and gifted education
Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may show natural abilities in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.
At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support high potential students with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.
Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?
Recognising potential and developing talent
Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.
Tailored lessons
Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.
Rich opportunities and activities
Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in the arts, sport, leadership and more.
Opening doors to wider experiences
Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.
What is high potential and gifted education?
High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
At St Georges Basin Public School, HPGE lives in everyday practice. Many students have high potential, and we help that potential to grow into something powerful.
- Teachers identify students' learning needs in the classroom and use evidence-informed teaching practices to challenge and extend students. We provide learning pathways, including enrichment and extension programs and acceleration.
- Our supportive classroom environments promote a sense of belonging and encourage risk-taking, creativity and collaboration.
- Groups are flexible, students take lead roles, and feedback is strengths-based with clear goals and self-assessment.
- Our teachers engage in professional learning to support the diverse needs of all students, including our high potential and gifted learners.
At St Georges Basin Public School, we recognise that every student is unique, so we provide flexible and diverse opportunities for them to shine.

St Georges Basin Public School is a proud participant in the Far South Coast Dance Festival, where our students showcase their creativity, skill, and passion for performance on a professional stage.
In preparing for and performing at this festival, students develop discipline, collaboration, and confidence, while expressing themselves through the arts.
This opportunity supports our HPGE focus by extending talent in the creative domain, fostering critical and creative thinking, and celebrating excellence in the performing arts.

At St Georges Basin Public School, students take the lead in Dragon Radio, a lunchtime program, and Dragon Talks, our student-hosted podcast.
These platforms give students the chance to share news, music, creative segments, and interviews with special guests. By hosting live broadcasts and recorded discussions, students build confidence, strengthen communication skills, and develop leadership.
Both Dragon Radio and Dragon Talks Podcast encourage critical thinking, collaboration, and the opportunity to extend talents through authentic experiences such as interviewing and engaging with diverse voices.

Each year, St Georges Basin Public School proudly participates in the Premier’s Sporting Challenge, encouraging students to set personal goals, track their progress, and embrace healthy, active lifestyles. Beyond physical activity, the challenge fosters perseverance, teamwork, and self-motivation.
This aligns closely with our HPGE approach by extending opportunities for students to excel in the physical domain, challenge themselves to reach new goals, and showcase their talents through sport and wellbeing initiatives.

Students from St Georges Basin Public School contribute their creativity to Operation Art, an initiative that showcases student artworks in hospitals and galleries across NSW.
Through this program, students have the opportunity to express ideas, emotions, and perspectives in ways that inspire and uplift others.
Participation in Operation Art nurtures talent in the creative domain, encourages critical and imaginative thinking, and provides authentic platforms for our students to extend and celebrate their artistic strengths.

At St Georges Basin Public School, students proudly participate in PSSA sport, representing our school in competitions against other schools. Those selected for these teams demonstrate skill, commitment, and sportsmanship at a higher level of competition.
This experience provides students with opportunities to extend their abilities, work collaboratively, and strive for excellence.
Participation in PSSA sport directly supports our HPGE approach by nurturing talent in the physical domain, encouraging perseverance and leadership, and offering authentic pathways for students to challenge themselves and showcase their strengths.
